Infertility Q & A
What is infertility?
Infertility is common in the United States and affects millions of women of childbearing age. Medically, infertility is defined as the inability to get pregnant (or stay pregnant) after 12 months of regular intercourse without the use of birth control. For women 35 and up, infertility is considered probable after six months of unprotected sex.
Pregnancy is a multi-step process. In order for you to get pregnant, your ovaries must release an egg, which then travels down your fallopian tube to your uterus. Along the way, the egg must meet up with sperm for fertilization, and then the fertilized egg must attach itself to your uterus.
Any malfunction or problem with one of the steps makes it harder for you to get pregnant.
What causes infertility?
Infertility may develop from many causes. In women, the most common cause of infertility is related to irregularities with ovulation, which may develop from an underlying gynecological condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Though less common, structural problems in your reproductive organs, such as blocked fallopian tubes or uterine fibroids, may interfere with your ability to conceive.
Your difficulty in getting pregnant may also be related to infertility problems in your male partner.
What can I expect during an infertility evaluation?
Raveco Medical offers comprehensive evaluations to identify the underlying cause of your infertility problem. At your initial infertility evaluation, you can expect a thorough exam that includes a review of your medical history and a physical and pelvic exam.
The evaluation may include testing that assesses your:
- Ovulation
- Fallopian tubes
- Uterus
- Partner’s sperm
The information gathered during your infertility evaluation establishes a diagnosis, which is then used to develop your infertility treatment plan.
What treatments are available for infertility?
Raveco Medical includes a team of experienced physicians who develop individualized infertility treatment plans based on your specific health needs and diagnosis. Your provider performs a full workup of your fertility and then refers you to a network of specialists for either in vitro fertilization (IVF) or artificial insemination.
Infertility can affect your physical, mental, and emotional health, but it doesn’t mean you won’t ever have a child.
